Summer and the perks of the sunshine vitamin

Back to blog overview

Summer is well and truly here and with extended sunshine hours, we can all make the most of the benefits of Vitamin D – the sunshine vitamin, while still being sun smart of course.

Vitamin D, known as the sunshine vitamin, because your body naturally produces it when it is directly exposed to sunlight, is one of the most important ones for our body. This vitamin has several functions such as regulating the absorption of calcium and phosphorus which helps to strengthen bones and teeth as well as improving resistance against certain diseases.

There are so many benefits to vitamin D, but below are three of the most important ones, supported by research, that will enhance your mind, body and soul too.

Vitamin D reduces depression

Getting outdoors and feeling the kiss of the sunshine is one of the perks of summer and plays an important part in regulating your mood. One study showed that people with depression who received vitamin D supplements noticed an improvement in their symptoms. At this time of year, we are so lucky that we really don’t even need to take supplements, we can just open our doors and go for a walk or sit outside reading a book to receive the multiple benefits.  It’s true when you hear someone say – sunshine can brighten up your day!

 Vitamin D fights disease

Vitamin D can help build immunity and support your immune system by fighting off harmful bacteria and viruses. In fact, a study in 2017 analysed 25 random control trials comparing Vitamin D supplements to placebos, which found that vitamin D reduced the risk of acute respiratory infection with either daily or weekly vitamin D supplementation, particularly in individuals who were deficient. That means by just going outside and getting your daily dose of vitamin D you could boost your immune system, which is especially beneficial in these Covid times.

 Vitamin D boosts weight loss

And it’s also true that adding vitamin D to your diet can help you lose weight. In one study the combination of vitamin D and calcium provided an appetite-suppressing effect which meant they were able to lose more weight compared to those on a placebo supplement. If losing weight is on your new year's resolution list then why not get your vitamin D by going out for a walk or run. Summer is a great time to start these routines and it will only further support you on your weight management journey.

The benefits of vitamin D are vast and summer is the best time to naturally boost it. Encourage those you love to go out and make the most of it.
