Mental health is being talked about more often and October is Mental Health Month, the perfect chance to start sparking these conversations. In New Zealand, nearly half of our population will meet the criteria for a mental illness diagnosis at some stage and one in five of us will experience depression in any given year.
No matter where your mental health is at, there are always ways to make it better or help someone that is struggling with their mental health.
Talk and listen to the people around you. Sometimes the best way to connect is to disconnect from your phone and talk to people within your local community. Become involved in groups, sports clubs, book clubs, or organise an event with family and friends. Bring out the old board games you have or contact a friend you haven’t spoken to for a while.
Do something nice for a friend or a stranger - just someone that’s yet to become a friend. Thank someone, smile, or volunteer your time. Everybody has something to offer and it feels good to give.
Remember the simple things that give you joy. Lift your head from your phone and appreciate the little things in life. Try savouring the moment on whatever task you are doing from eating lunch to talking to friends. Practise gratitude and keep a diary of things that you’re grateful for on a daily basis.
Embrace new experiences. Push yourself a little out of your comfort zone and try something new. Sign up for a course you’ve always wanted to do, learn to play an instrument or learn a new language. Set a challenge that you’ll enjoy achieving and you might find that you keep finding to challenges to set and achieve.
Step outside and smell the roses as the old saying goes. Go for a walk around the neighbourhood, join a sports team or pull out some weeds in the garden. Doing some physical activity that suits your fitness level makes you feel good.
